Community ranking
Community ranking answers one question: where does your best piece sit among other Ergon rowers rowing the same event? It's opt-in, private, and computed over Ergon's own data — not scraped from Concept2 or borrowed from an undisclosed formula.
Who's in the pool
Only rowers who turn on Include me in rankings (Settings → Community ranking). Nobody is counted by default. Your own view can be narrowed further with facet chips — gender, age band, weight class, country, PM5-verified — each filtering the pool to your own value for that facet. Turning on a facet you don't have a value for (no weight class set, no country entered) does nothing; it stays off until that value exists.
The verified facet works differently: it doesn't compare you to rowers who share a value with you, it filters the pool to pieces carrying a PM5 verification code — a quality filter, not a similarity one.
Turning ranking off removes your results from the pool immediately — not at the next sync, not at the next refresh.
What counts as an eligible piece
Single-distance or single-time pieces only — no interval workouts. This is the same rule Concept2 uses for its own records: a 3x2000m isn't a 2K, and it isn't ranked as one. Your best eligible result for each event and window is the one that enters the pool.
Every machine ranks, including BikeErg. (Concept2 publishes BikeErg rankings but no BikeErg records — Ergon mirrors that distinction: BikeErg shows a rank here, but never a "record" label elsewhere in the app.)
How your rank is computed
For the event and window you're viewing, Ergon counts how many pool entries beat your score:
Rank = (results strictly better than yours) + 1.
A rank of 1 means nobody in the filtered pool beat you. Ties don't move you down — only a strictly faster time (or strictly farther distance, for time-based pieces) counts as "better."
Percentile and tier only show once the filtered pool has at least 30 results. Below that, you still see your rank and n, but not a percentile — a percentile computed over 6 people isn't a percentile, it's noise dressed up as one. Once n ≥ 30:
Percentile = floor(((n − rank) / n) × 100)
A percentile of 79 means you're ahead of 79% of the pool. Percentiles map to four named tiers:
| Percentile | Tier |
|---|---|
| 0–24 | Beginner |
| 25–49 | Intermediate |
| 50–79 | Advanced |
| 80–100 | Elite |
The tier names are a convenience label over the percentile — not a separate scoring system, not borrowed from any outside standard.
Windows
Three windows, matched to how you already browse Records:
- Season — Concept2's rowing season, May 1 – April 30.
- Year — calendar year.
- All-time — every eligible result, ever.
Your rank is computed fresh for whichever window you're viewing; a fast piece from three seasons ago only counts toward All-time, not this season's rank.
Privacy: opt-in, one-way, private
- Opt-in. Off by default. You choose to be counted.
- One-way. You see your own rank. You never see another rower's name or score, and nobody sees yours — there is no public leaderboard.
- Immediate exit. Turn ranking off and your results leave the pool right away.
Nothing here changes if you leave ranking off: your personal bests, trends, and watts/kg still work exactly the same. The ranking section simply doesn't apply to you.
The self-selected-pool caveat
Ergon rowers are not a random sample of everyone who owns an erg — they're an engaged, opted-in pool of people who track their training closely enough to use this app. That skews the pool faster than the general rowing population. A 50th-percentile Ergon time is not a 50th-percentile time among all rowers everywhere; it's the middle of a group that already trains with intent. Read your tier as "relative to other Ergon rowers," not "relative to rowers in general."
